"Imaging" is a broad term for tests that let clinicians see inside the body without surgery. Three of the most common are X-ray, CT (computed tomography), and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). They aren't interchangeable — each uses different physics and shines a light on different kinds of tissue. Your physician chooses based on what they need to evaluate.
X-ray
X-rays use a small amount of ionizing radiation to create a flat, two-dimensional image. Dense structures like bone absorb more radiation and show up clearly, which makes X-ray a fast, widely available first step.
- Best known for: bones and fractures, joints, chest, and certain dense structures
- How it feels: quick and painless, usually just seconds
- Uses radiation: yes — a low dose
CT scan
A CT scanner takes many X-ray images from different angles and uses a computer to combine them into detailed cross-sectional "slices." This gives far more detail than a single X-ray and is fast, which is why CT is common in emergency and trauma settings.
- Best known for: detailed views of bone, internal bleeding, the chest and abdomen, and acute trauma
- How it feels: quick; you lie still as the table moves through a ring-shaped scanner
- Uses radiation: yes — typically more than a single X-ray
MRI
MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves — not ionizing radiation — to produce highly detailed images, especially of soft tissue. It generally takes longer than X-ray or CT and is known for the knocking or buzzing sounds the machine makes during a scan.
- Best known for: soft tissue such as the brain, spinal cord, discs, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and muscles
- How it feels: longer and louder; you stay still while detailed images are captured
- Uses radiation: no ionizing radiation

A note on MRI safety screening
Because MRI uses a powerful magnet, facilities screen for metal and certain implanted devices before a scan. Some implants are not compatible with MRI, while many modern devices are "MRI-conditional" under specific conditions. Always tell your care team about any implants, devices, or metal in your body.
